and you have to use their battery hogging VOIP app. Their VOIP plan is
only 200 minutes and 500 texts. There are better VOIP providers such as
Google's Hangouts app+ free Google voice service for unlimited talk +
text VOIP services. Like FP's VOIP service, Google voice VOIP assigns
you a number.

If you are using the phone in areas with poor data service, it will have
poor voice service. You can alternatively use Google Voice (or other
services). GVoice users: Your proxy is international so make sure you
dial (+1) first.

To make sure that voice calls work:
In the Freedompop app, go to the Menu (top left corner), scroll down and click on [Sync Account Data].

What happens if I go over the limit?
For data over use, an auto charge of $15 will apply to your card at
.02$/mb. For the 200 minutes talk or 200 text, your account will
suspends until next billing cycle.
FreedomPop Friends thread: Here you can add up to 500Mb data to your limit by adding 10 (or more as back up) friends.
https://slickdeals.net/f/5276432-freedompop-friends
PS: You can buy multiple SIMs (same address/CC) but using different
emails accounts would let you add new friends (thus have additional
500Mb data). See Q5 below.

2B. How do I ensure I don't get charged at all? Nothing as in NADA!

Use a virtual credit card (BOA or Citi cards) when setting up FP
account. Set a $6 limit on the VCC (test authorization that drops off
has been raised to $5)

After signup, immediately downgrade to basic free voice, remove the
Premium services, disable premium voice and disable voicemail. Don't
wait until 30 days is over- you WILL forget (see links at the beginning of wiki)

Add 10 FP friends to get additional 500MB- see thread https://slickdeals.net/f/5276432-freedompop-friends

Your downgraded plan with have 200MB + 500MB more if you add 10 FP friends.

Use Google Voice for VOIP unlimited talk and text with hangouts
dialer app, CSIPmobile, or any other VOIP client for voice and texting
needs.

If you choose to use FP battery hogging VOIP app, you will have 200
minutes and 500 texts. FP is in reality a data only company. Not a text
and talk provider over native 2G networks like every other cell carrier
out there. You are better off using Hangouts + Google voice for
unlimited talk + text VOIP services.

Close your virtual credit card so no charges go through.

Add the free Global 100 VOIP plan to your account to make free VOIP
international calls to 50+ countries. You can use FP VOIP app to make
these international calls or use another VOIP app like CsipSimple if you
can extract your FP VOIP credentials- https://forum.xda-developers.com/...?t=2595081

3. Do I need to activate it?
It will arrive to you already activated

4. What network does FreedomPop use?
This exclusive promotion runs off ONLY Nationwide 4G LTE GSM Network,
100% Free 4G LTE Internet can be yours with our basic FREE plan!
This is based on the AT&T network. Connection is fast but as for any service providers, that is based on the location.

Note: There is another SIM card called "Global SIM"
(international GSM) that FreedomPop offers. That one is using the 3G
data; thus a bit slower and ping times are longer. This one is better
for USA use.

5. Why does my second account share and receive data?
Secondary accounts currently do not have the functionality to share and
receive data with your FreedomPop friends. If this is a problem and you
need to send and receive data to a global sim account, we advise you to
purchase this deal through a new email account. Please make sure to LOG OUT of your current freedompop account and use a new email address when signing up for this deal. In other words, don't buy another SIM from the same account (ignore the 2nd SIM offer) .

6. If I signed up for a paid plan or trial, how do I downgrade it?
You can downgrade your plans/trials directly on your FreedomPop account page (better use the links above, if you are novice).

7. Have an Account or Billing Issue?
We encourage all our users to come to us first to see if we can explain
any charge or resolve any billing issue before further escalation.

10. Is this a scam? Is FP business model commercially viable? What if they go bankrupt or shutdown like RingPlus?
Although Freedompop's conversion rate from free to paying customers is
in the high double digits, the revenue is not enough to sustain their
expenses, especially with the upfront costly expansions to Spain, UK,
and Mexico (not to mention the "free" 8GB microSD cards and selfie
sticks for US customers). What is keeping the FP afloat and expanding is
VC and strategic funding- over $109M to date. FP is now trying to
monetize its upsell platform, resulting in its first licensing revenue
agreement with Hutchinson Wind.

Had the RingPlus ringback advoice model been successful- RingPlus could
have made a similar play on licensing. However, RP never attracted any
major VC capital and seed investment not to mention RingPlus's Karl
Seelig doesn't have the VC/ M&A connections or the fame like FP's
founders Stephen Stokol/ Niklas zennström. Therefore the RingPlus gravy
train ended the way it was.

If you look at FP founders' Stokol's/ Zennstrom's history and
background, the playbook of FP is pretty clear. Build a large sub
customer base (whether of not these are active or not) at the lowest
cost (cheap sim cards with free gifts like microSD cards or selfie
sticks) and then sell the company for a tidy billion dollar plus
valuation.

Yes FP losses are in the low millions annually but they have $100M in
raised capital so they can afford to run at a loss for many more years.
Each time they ship a package with the SIM card it costs them around $8 -
$10 in 3rd party logistics fulfillment and shipping costs, not to
factor in the costs of the free gifts. There's no way $0.99 or $0.01
cost to you or me covers those costs.

This is called "new customer acquisition" costs in finance. This is no
different from Snapchat which has been running $400M - $600M in losses
every year but can afford to do so thanks to their $2.7B war chest
raised thus far prior to its IPO.

FP's most recent international expansion efforts will be less a drag on
profitability as these expansion expenses will shared with their
partners (Dish Mexico for the Mexican expansion, Axiata for later Asian
expansion) unlike their UK and Spain expansion.

With regards to return on investment for investors, the question is not
whether it will happen but when and how much of a price Freedompop will
fetch. There were already serious acquisition talks with Intel which
fell through a year ago. M&A and VC activity is already starting to
pick up in the US and around the world given the low interest envionment
so I wouldn't be surprised that some telco/ technology company (a la
Microsoft's $8.5B purchase of Skype)/ VC fund (a la Masayoshi Son's
SoftBank $100B Vision Fund) would pick up Freedompop for several
hundreds of millions of dollars.

WARNING: It is recommended that you do a
search for and thoroughly read an online guide to the FreedomPop SIM
products. Failing to understand the ins and outs of this deal will
likely result in unexpected charges.
You get 500MB free per month, above that you pay a tiered level (i.e.
500MB-1GB is an additional $10). They bank on you using more by posting
pictures of Cats jumping into cardboard boxes.
3) It is wholesale Sprint service, re-branded with their logo. No different that what other companies do.
4) The equipment is refurbished, and the USB style modems we bought do both 3G and 4G.
5)
We bought separate Cradlepoint MBR95 routers to go along with them
(match the router with which modem/provider you choose in any case).
These routers provide a wired 4-port 10/100 ethernet and WiFi service to
your site. Used routers are around $50-$75 on eBay.

MotoTRBO
is reported to use less than the 500MB a month you buy, so effectively
it's free for a one-box site. If you need more data, you either pay for
it or do "offers" from partners to earn bandwidth. For a
master/manager/c-bridge site obviously you want a more dedicated
connection. For a TRBO box on a Farm silo, this is perfect.

This
all depends on the carriers capacity, support and resiliency. Some
providers don't have extended emergency power, so expecting this to work
for EMCOMM 100% may not be ideal.

This interview is really great with Stephen from This Week In Start-ups.
Its over a year old but really gives you some insight into the mind
behind one of the most important tech companies out today.

I enjoyed the video, then with 20 minutes left, realized that I wasn't
on FreedomPop. Up o 1 minutes of that cost me 26MB. Still only used 2.07
gigs and one gig to use in about 3 days left. Please don't sell out
in only three years. Too short for us users.
Unfortunately, FreedomPop doesn't have access to cellular in Canada
– free or paid. However, You can sign up for a calling plan (Free 100,
or paid 300/1000 global minutes). These global minutes can be used to
call Canada.

And if you use Wi-Fi, you will be able to use
I like a little travel now and then. I go to some cool places; Austin, Boston, Seattle, LA, and even Newport Beach was ok. And I have been going to Toronto quite a bit lately now. It’s a nice city. I always have a good time there, but I am scared to death to turn my phone on. I hear the horror stories of people making a few calls and ending up with $200+ phone bills. Or forgetting to turn off cellular and getting a $4,000 bill for data. So the last couple of times I’ve traveled to Toronto I call Verizon ahead of time and turn on the international plan so Canada is covered, but I am getting really tired of the fees Verizon Wireless charges for traveling outside of the US. This last trip I didn’t even use my phone at all except when I was on wifi and the fee was still $25.

So, I am looking at my alternatives. Even though we are trading partners and some people say Canada is the 51st State up north, I can not find a US cell provider that offers reasonable coverage and rates in the US and Canada. So do I buy a cheap unlocked phone and buy a SIM card when I am up there next? I did that years ago with an old iPhone 3. I just read about Truphone’s Tru SIM international cards, but it’s pretty easy and probably cheaper to just buy a cheap SIM card once I get to where I am going.

Some guys that use to work for me bought an unlocked mifi in Singapore and then got a local SIM card so they could not only get their phones on wifi, but it also worked for their laptops. And my iPad doesn’t get cellular service while I am in Canada either, so maybe that would be nice. Seems easier than the phone, but I foresee technical issues.

Honestly, I am getting tired of paying my standard Verizon Wireless bill here in the US and then also paying $20 a month for my iPad. So is there an alternative mifi I can use in the US and in Canada (even better if it works in Europe too)? I have looked at Karma and FreedomPop. I love Karma’s pay for what you use model. And they both seem very reasonable (much much cheaper than Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, or T-mobile) and both have pretty good coverage in the DC area. But neither work very well in Maine (or any other less populated area) and neither has coverage at all anywhere in Canada (or Europe). So I do not see that route fixing my entire problem, at least until they expand their coverage significantly.

It won’t help me in the States, but if I plan ahead I could rent a XCom Global International mifi Hotspot. But at almost $18 a day (plus you pay for shipping) that will quickly turn out to be more than I have been paying Verizon Wireless.

So, I am looking at Boingo. Boingo looks like a win win – 1) it solves my $20 per month iPad fee from Verizon and 2) I’d be able to get online while in Toronto (and they say most of Europe too). And I’d save money! For Boingo’s mobile only plan, it’s just $8 a month for two devices. From looking at their map they seem to have decent coverage in the DC area. And I checked Austin, Boston, LA, and Seattle seem to have good coverage too. And it looks like they have saturated the area around the University of Toronto, so I’d get excellent coverage there too. Anyone have any hands-on experience with Boingo? Should I ditch my iPad’s Verizon wireless plan and go Boingo instead? It looks like I’d still get coverage here in DC and everywhere else I travel (including Toronto) and save $12 a month to boot. I’d love to hear from people subscribing (or that use to subscribe) to Boingo about their experience.

That just means if someone, like me, has the global free plan in the US or another supported country, they can call Canadian number. On the other hand, if you are located in Canada, the global free plan will work for calling, but only if you have a data connection (wifi or another cellular carrier). Freedompop's voice network is voip, meaning it is an Internet based call service (similar to skype, google hangouts, etc), so the data connection does not actually have to be a Freedompop data connection. Does that make sense?

Freemium Sprint MVNO FreedomPop today announced the launch of a global hotspot and SIM that gives users 200 MB per month of free data in 25 countries including the US, UK and most of Europe.

The $10 FreedomPop Global SIM is "coming soon", but the Novatel MiFi 2 hotspot is available now at freedompop.com/worldwide for $49.99 plus $9.99 shipping. According to FreedomPop the hotspot doesn't support LTE, only the older and slower HSPA+, HSPA, Edge and GPRS data standards. However the MiFi 2 manual says that the device does support LTE, although only on US bands 17 and 4. Perhaps FreedomPop's service agreement with the unspecified US GSM operator (probably T-Mobile) that it's using doesn't include LTE.

Update 4:45 PM 1/20: FreedomPop has confirmed on Twitter that LTE will not be available with the global service.

Unlike FreedomPop's Sprint based free plans which come with 500 free MB per month, the free global plan only includes 200 MB. Overage data on the free plan is 2.5¢/MB. FreedomPop is also offering two paid global plans; 1 GB/month for $13.99 or 2 GB/month for $24.99. Overage data on the paid plans is 2¢/MB. For $3.99/month users on any plan can rollover up to 500 MB of unused data per month.

The FreedomPop global service is currently available to customers in the US and the UK and works in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. FreedomPop plans to expand service to Bangladesh, Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South America, Thailand and Vietnam "soon".

In an interview with FierceWireless, FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols said that the global service is not roaming. Instead Stokols said that FreedomPop has negotiated individual deals with operators in each country. He also revealed that FreedomPop is paying between $4 and $5 per GB for GSM data.

In other FreedomPop news, the company announced that it has received an additional $50 million in funding from an unspecified investor. That brings FreedomPop's total funding to $109 million. FreedomPop also says it has added over 1 million subscribers since launch.
In the US, Tello uses the Sprint network.

Another free option is wifi-calling (VoIP). If you're staying indoors for the majority of time (where wifi is presumably available), then wifi-calling can offload some of your minute/data need. A popular solution is Google Voice (GV) and Hangouts, which will need to be set up stateside, and you'll need to invest in an iOS or Android phone. Hangouts has free calling to both US and Canada, and would be ideal for your situation.

Both RingPlus (R+) and FreedomPop (FP) can be good solutions, as long as you know their caveats. Neither extends to Canada, unless you use Hangouts on top of their service. The "unreliability" cited is mainly limited to inbound voice. Outbound voice and data are as reliable as any other provider.

FP is VoIP, which relies on Sprint LTE or AT&T/TMO HSPA+ coverage. VoIP calls in a moving vehicle aren't advisable, as they may get dropped. VoIP voice quality may vary depending coverage location. (This includes Hangouts, which is also VoIP.) R+ has regular voice, but can have high latency.

As freemiums, R+/FP accounts are restricted so they can upsell. You can bypass the restrictions by using Hangouts on top of their service. For FP, you'll want to disable the bundled extra-cost options when signing up. For R+, you'll need to find an eligible Sprint phone, as Sprint has restrictions on what phones can be used.

You can get more details for R+/FP from their respective threads on here. As typical, there's lots of noise in forum threads, so suggest selective reading and skimming. Use your Google-fu, and keep up your bias filter.

As can be inferred from the recurring mentions of Hangouts above, I think it's a good complement to increase the freemiums' functionality. I'd suggest using it in place of FP's own VoIP. It's also a good wifi-calling solution, as well as a flexible tie-in to integrate the disparate accounts into one calling number.

All this info can be overwhelming, so I'll offer an action-list as a shortcut:

1. Have your US contact set up a Google Voice account, buy a cheap GSM Android phone, install Hangouts & Hangouts Dialer app on it with the GV account, and send it to you. The GV setup and Hangouts install have to be done with a US IP.

2. Drop in an existing SIM you're using. Try Hangouts for wifi-calling, and with the SIM's cell data. Hangouts uses about .7MB/minute for voice.

3. If you think VoIP via Hangouts is acceptable, get some FP GSM SIMs. Each SIM allows 600MB (usable) free monthly, so based on your 500MB/day usage, then get one SIM for each day of the trip, and swap in a different SIM daily. Use Hangouts with the SIM data to get voice/text/voicemail.

4. Use Tello or equivalent PAYGO solution as a backstop. Wifi-calling is your 1st option, FP GSM SIM your 2nd, and Tello your last. If Tello, then you'd need a 2nd phone, as Tello uses Sprint, which doesn't use GSM. Both phones would be tied to a single GV number.
Having honed its services in the US, FreedomPop headed across the pond to set up shop in the UK last September, but evidently that's not sated its desire to travel. Today, the provider is launching a new roaming SIM in both the US and the UK that will let customers use free data abroad for the first time.

Though it's known as the "Global SIM," initially it'll only work in the US and the vast majority of Europe, including the UK (obviously). By year's end, however, FreedomPop is planning to expand roaming coverage to additional countries in Southeast Asia, Latin America and beyond. The SIM itself costs $10/£10 to buy and you'll need to add another couple of bucks/pounds to cover the shipping cost; but after that you get the basic service, which affords you 200MB of 3G/4G data each month to use across any of the supported countries, completely free.

Should you exhaust that allowance, you can simply buy additional data, which is one of the ways FreedomPop makes money. An extra 500MB can be had for $10/£10, or you can buy in bulk at discounted rates ($50 for 4GB, for example). International data roaming is obviously the main selling point of the SIM, which is why FreedomPop's also offering a WiFi hotspot to stick it in for the introductory price of $50/£39. You can just plug it straight into your tablet or smartphone of course, though you don't get any inclusive minutes or texts like you do with the provider's mobile-specific plans. Also, to use voice and text services by way of FreedomPop's mobile apps, you first have to buy a virtual number based in one of the supported countries.

Like the provider's mobile-specific plans, you will be able to "earn" extra data by completing surveys, downloading vouchers and the like. Similarly, FreedomPop's value-added services, like rollover data and additional virtual numbers, can be added to the Global SIM plan for small monthly fees. If all you need is the barebones service, though, stick within the 200MB monthly limit and it won't cost you a cent/penny.
when roaming in the U.S. It's pretty good, it uses T-Mobile's network
(and I have a handset that supports Band 12, which helps). It costs
$4.95 CAD per day, which includes unlimited phoning and texting
(including long-distance back to Canada), and 500MB of LTE per day. At
the current exchange rate that's only $3.82 USD per day, and extremely
competitive compared to other per-day alternatives (such at AT&T's
$2 + $1 per 100MB plan).

However, I've recently become acquainted with free options such as Ring+
and Freedompop. Are there other free options of note? I prefer GSM, and
I understand that Freedompop does offer GSM service, but I can live
with Sprint service if it's for free (as I'll still have the ability to
roam onto T-Mobile and/or AT&T when necessary) or if the
data/minute/text allotments are higher. So I'm assuming I'd be using the
Sprint side of Freedompop if I went that way.

This would be for occasional trips only, just a few times a year for a
trip that's less than a week. I wouldn't be doing a lot of usage. My
understanding is that Ring+ requires you to use it at least once each
billing cycle? I can potentially do that, I live close to the border,
but it would probably only work if Sprint has refarmed ESMR in
Washington State. How important is that consideration? Does Freedompop
have that as well? If so, do they have it for both their Sprint-based
service and their T-Mobile-based service?

I have family in the U.S. that can activate the service for me and send
me the SIM/phone/whatever. I'm OK with an activation fee, buying a
phone, what have you, so long as it's a one-time cost that offers a
long-term savings. I'm also just fine with phoning/texting back to
Canada not included, because I can forward my Canadian number to a U.S.
number, and I can use Skype/Whatsapp/etc. as well.

Do either of them require running apps? My hope would be to use a
Windows phone, but I could suck it up and use another platform if need
be.

Any advice based on the above criteria?
Ringplus and Freedompop are the only free ones I know of. Neither are very reliable for voice service. Ringplus works most of the time, but not as reliable as standard carrier cell voice service. Ringplus routes their voice calls through their own servers. Free calling on Freedompop is VOIP over cell or wifi data. Sprint is not known for ubiquitous high speed data for VOIP calls.
Ringplus' requirement is some usage for outgoing calls in a 60 day period. We have no idea how closely they are monitoring or enforcing that. Don't know about Freedompop. For Ringplus you could put a SIP client on a phone or other computer and use their Fluidcall wifi calling to do the 60 day thing from anywhere.
Other than the Truly Free plan on Ringplus they require a credit card for the account. I doubt they will accept a Canadian one. Ringplus has an initial $5-$30 Top Up requirement rather than an activation fee. The money is yours to spend or languish in the account. For many of us it is effectively an activation fee.

Do either of them require running apps? My hope would be to use a Windows phone, but I could suck it up and use another platform if need be.
Ringplus does not require running an app. Don't know about Freedompop. An allowed Windows phone will work on Ringplus, but that will limit your selection.
Take a look at Tello paygo. Not free but inexpensive with no monthly cost and minimal balance and usage requirement.
Good luck eh
Thank you for your other responses. I'm curious about this. It says U.S. calling is $0.03 per minute, but Canadian phoning is only $0.01/minute (excepting the territories). Is that a long distance surcharge on top of the U.S. rate, or is the Canadian rate cheaper for some reason? Ditto the SMS rate, it says it's $0.01 to the U.S. and $0.01 to Canada. Does that mean it's a total of $0.01 to text Canada, or a total of $0.02 per SMS? I've never paid per SMS before, so I guess I'd have to be careful with concatenated SMSs!

For light data use this might indeed suit my needs (the equivalent of $20/GB, apparently non-expiring). I take it Tello uses the mobile network for calls and SMSs, not VoIP?

Again, FreedomPop is awesome and they have free internet devices. One is a hot spot and the other is a USB drive.

It gives 500MB of data a month free. Again, you can pay for a plan or just pay per mb when you go over.

They sell them for $20 and sometimes give them away for free. I got
ours from FreedomPop free because they were giving away old models (I
think). Better someone use them and get roped into their plan than to
let it sit… I guess?

Think about though…
Pay the one time $29.99 to buy the hotspot. Then pay $0 a month from
here on out. Okay. Compare that to Boingo. Boingo is $9.99 a month or
for like once use, and they have stingy fees, and their service sucks
depending where you are in an airport. Since we’ll have the Southwest Companion Pass,
this makes way more sense. Besides the fact I can use it outside of the
airport, it’s better than a Boingo plan for domestic airports.

Update: On our road trip to the Grand Canyon (with Carrie’s
family) I spent the entire time in the back of the van online, mostly
answering emails, some browsing the web and forums (Saverocity forums)
and the first day of all-day use I used less than 100mb. But I made
sure I wasn’t logged into things I wasn’t using, like dropbox. And I
turned off Facebook’s automatic streaming of videos.

FreedomPop ending? FreedomPop has announced that they will
stop their WiMax (?) services by the end of 2015. No one knows exactly
how this will affect/change things. When? New hardware or new firmware
update? If it’s a hardware update, will your product be replaced? No
idea.

In this video I'll go through every step in choosing the FREE cell service plan from FreedomPop.

FreedomPop
offers totally free talk, text, and data, but when you first purchase a
phone it will usually come with a free trial of their premium paid
plans. If you do not cancel ALL the free trials you will be charged
automatically at the end of the billing cycle.

When you want to
downgrade to the Free Basic 200 plan, you need to downgrade your Talk,
Text, and Data plan, as well as any additional premium services you are
subscribed to. I'll also show you how to disable the Auto-Top up
feature. Beware, if the Top-up feature is off and you do not have any
credits, your service may be shut-off if you near your limits. At that
point you can add credits or wait until the next month when your free
plan is renewed.

FreedomPop makes money by up-selling it's
premium services, but in my opinion, they should make the process of
downgrading much easier, and they should be more clear with their TOS.
That said, the free and paid service has been very good thus far, and if
you want a paid plan, FreedomPop has very good prices.
We are all wifi. We don’t really have a phone plane. We have options for wifi.

Most everywhere has wifi. Hotels, airports, restaurants, most stores, the walking mall in Cville, the busses and parks in Hong Kong, etc… You’re close to wifi at any given point in time.

More and more places have wifi and signals on phones and routers are getting better.
The best part is that we can make calls from anywhere in the world. A traditional phone plan allows you to only make calls in the US. Seeing as we’ve spent maybe 2 months in the last year in the US… that would be kind of a waste.
Pros:

Skype is good at getting online and a few times at airports that
only sell wifi, skype can sometimes charge your account to get online.

Signals are good and communication is good even on shotty wifi… most of the time.

Voice mail

Being able to login and call from multiple devices. I can call from my phone or laptop.

Cons:

No Text SMS at all on your phone number.

It’s not cloud based. Minor detail but contacts and history will be on your phone/computer and not in the cloud.

great for what I am using it as. In Niagara Falls, I am getting 4 bars
of Sprint service even though I am on the Canadian side. Because there
are many wifi hotspots wherever I am going, FreedomPop calling and
texting works flawlessly on WiFi. Canadian numbers are also supported
for calling, which other major carriers charge for (because FP uses
layered.net for its calls, Canada is included). I'm a happy camper , and I have to say that I am really impressed with the service I am getting here. Kudos FreedomPop!
Or conduct business internationally? What if you could call your contacts outside the U.S. for free, from any phone? Now you can. Just in time for the holiday season, FreedomPop, the free wireless Internet company, is launching the world's first-ever, completely free international calling service.

Beginning today, FreedomPop will give any smartphone user with any carrier 100 minutes of free international calls each month to 52 countries, including Mexico, the UK, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Brazil, Argentina and India. The service will expand to over 170 markets in the coming weeks. FreedomPop users who want more minutes can upgrade to an international paid plan starting at just $4.99 per month – over 75 percent lower than the rates charged by current carriers and even VoIP providers like Skype.

FreedomPop also announced the first ever program to provide users anywhere in the world an international number, letting contacts outside the country make international calls as if they are local. For example, a customer based in Los Angeles can get a Mexico City phone number so family members based in Mexico can call at local rates, or vice versa. The service costs just $4.99 per month, yet can save international callers hundreds of dollars a year.

"FreedomPop's mission has always been about ensuring that everyone has access to affordable and essential communication services. Free international calling is the next step in giving consumers true freedom to connect with friends, family and colleagues across the world" said Steven Sesar, FreedomPop's COO. "We know there is high demand for international calling, especially around the holidays, and what better holiday gift than to provide a free international calling service to any smartphone user."

FreedomPop's free international calling plans are available on all FreedomPop smartphones and to any Android or iOS user via the FreedomPop Free Talk and Text app.
